Tributes II: Remembering More of the Worlds Greatest Wrestlers (Wrestling Observer) Review

Tributes II: Remembering More of the Worlds Greatest Wrestlers (Wrestling Observer)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Tributes II is a vast improvement over the original. As much as I enjoyed the first volume of "Tributes," I feel it was riddled with way too many photographs at the expense of the stories. Several of the tributes ---most notably those of Giant Baba and Junkyard Dog--- were edited down from the original appearance in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (not to mention the original "Grassroots" paperback publication of Tributes). In the case of the Junkyard Dog obituary, the omissions took out a lot of the emotion behind the story.
The appearance and text of Tributes II really shines. Dave Meltzer's journalism is every bit as sharp as before, but much less of his written word winds up on the cutting room floor to make room for the umpteenth full page color photo.
For those of you who have never read Dave Meltzer's work before, you will find that The Grim Reaper is often his finest muse. While a collection of obituaries might seem like a grim read to those unfamiliar with the inner workings of the pro wrestling industry, this is far from the case. Dave does an especially good job covering both the glory and complications in the life of a wrestler. You will read about wrestlers who lived long, fascinating lives (Freddie Blassie, Johnny Valentine, Stu Hart), as well as wrestlers who lived fast and fell hard (Davey Boy Smith, Hawk, Curt Hennig). Perhaps the most difficult read is the tribute to Owen Hart, who did not live fast, and whose tragic accident seemed preventable.
Bret Hart writes a particularly moving foreward to Tributes II, where he talks about the love/hate relationship he and other wrestlers had with Dave Meltzer's newsletter when it first became the rage in the mid 1980s. The wrestling community resented Meltzer for spilling the secrets of a tight-lipped industry, but its members were always asking fellow wrestlers if they had a copy of the current issue they could borrow. Hart tells about his own transformation from a hesitant Wrestling Observer reader to a wrestler who realizes that an insider sheet can benefit the wrestlers in an industry where the grapplers often get short changed by unscrupulous players.
A nice bonus is the DVD that accompanies the book, which has Meltzer sharing his thoughts on the wrestlers featured in this edition. When I popped the DVD in, I was expecting a 15 minute "take it or leave it" interview. I was pleasantly surprised to find there was a little over one hour of high quality interview time!
While the previous edition of Tributes is a must read, Tributes II immensely exceeds its depth and quality. If you want to shell out your money on only one edition, "Tributes II" wins by a wide margin.

The Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame: The Heels (Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame series) Review

The Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame: The Heels (Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Finally there's a book on the over-flowing wrestling literature market dedicated to the wrestlers that we, the enthusiastic legion of marks, absolutely love to hate. We call them bad guys, villains, or evil-doers, but in the carnival world of professional wrestling, they are known as "HEELS." The purpose of a wrestling heel is to create a buzz around a match or a storyline and influence the marks (fans) to buy tickets and maybe a little merchandise too - this "buzz" is called "HEAT." The heat generated by these sultans of immorality is ultimately the catalyst that builds up our favorite wrestlers, the ones we cheer for, into bonafide heroes. So in essence, the heel is the most important responsibility in a professional wrestling environment.
Established wrestling journalists, Greg Oliver and Steven Johnson, hit the road to conduct hundreds of interviews with wrestlers, managers, promoters, historians and many others to piece together mini-biographies of about seventy-five of the most hated grapplers of all-time. Starting with a top twenty, and then cycling through several categories such as Pioneers, Madmen, Monsters, Technicians, Foreigners and several others (I'm not going to spoil it for you!). All of your favorite bad guys are found in the latest publication in the "Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame" series. Previous Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame books featured compelling stories about Canadian wrestlers, and Tag Teams - both highly recommended.
My personal favorite heel of all-time, The Sheik, did make it to the top twenty but did not place first as I would have prophesized; however the top twenty is a veritable who's who of wrestling villainy.

Some other Hall of Fame heels you can look forward to reading about are (in no particular order); Randy Savage, George "The Animal" Steel, Gorgeous George, Fred Blassie, Gorilla Monsoon, Eddie Gilbert, Nick Bockwinkel, Ric Flair, Roddy Piper, Mr. Perfect, The Iron Sheik, Jake "the Snake" Roberts, Ted DiBiase, Bad News Allen, JBL, Rick Rude, Bulldog Brower (featured on the cover photo), Johnny Valentine, Terry Funk and that is only the tip of the blood-soaked iceberg. There is a perfect blend of old school and new school incorporated into this book and there are several chapters covering some very obscure wrestlers, who nevertheless are deserving of a mention in this book. All the many heel philosophies are covered in this book, from guys who use fear to manipulate the audience, to the connivers who use their superior intellect to outsmart their opponents, to the guys who pride themselves on being bar-room brawl specialists - you really get a feel for the art of being a wrestling bad guy in, and sometimes out of, the squared circle. It's a fascinating journey that manages to maintain a positive twist despite the focus on debauchery that occurs within the professional wrestling realm.
The wrestling industry has always been build on the philosophy of good vs. evil - but the truth of the matter is one cannot survive without the other. To quote my old pal, Diamond Dallas Page (who is not featured in this book), that's not a bad thing, that's a good thing!

As the first comprehensive look at the ruffians, rascals, and rule breakers in the wrestling business, this history explains the rise of the wrestling villain, the reasons for his (or her) success, and the impact these sordid characters have had on the sport. Based on first-hand interviews with hundreds of wrestlers, managers, promoters, and historians, these entertaining profilesdocument wrestling's top rotten apples from the 1920s to today, providing plenty of support for the book's claim that fans love to hate the bad guys as much as they love to love the heroes. With remarkable candor, wrestling's troublemakers explain why they became villains and how they perceived and honed their roles; the sport is richer for the presence of the nefarious ones—and they know it. With more than 150 never-before-seen photos, this book will satisfy devoted fans and inspire everyone else to take a look at the exciting and often bizarre world of professional wrestling.

The Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame: The Tag Teams (Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame series) Review

The Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame: The Tag Teams (Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame series)

Greg Oliver & Steve Johnson did an outstanding job in writing The Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame: The Tag Teams. No other wrestling history book ever has gone to the effort that these guys have. Ever tag team written about was either contacted an interviewed or if all the memebers were deceased at least a family member was tracked down and interviewed. Their rating system was well done and not without contraversy. Love or hate where they ranked your favorite tag team, they made you think about it and discussion amongst the wrestling community has been hot and heavy on this book. Great insight into many tag teams from years gone by the most fans either new little about or never heard of. They helped bring back memories of great teams like the Kangaroos, Kentuckians and The Infernos. Great photos a sprinkled throught. This is a must read for any wrestling fan of tag team wrestling. No other wrestling history book even comes close to covering tag team wrestling like this book.

Chair Shots and Other Obstacles: Winning Life's Wrestling Matches Review

Chair Shots and Other Obstacles: Winning Life's Wrestling Matches
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A self help book from a wrestler is a bit hard to swallow. It is particularly hard to swallow when the wrestler played the role of a crook or con-artist so well. Through his second book, we see a different side of Bobby Heenan. While I would not call it a helpful book, it is entertaining.
In "Chair Shots ...", Bobby Heenan uses wrestling terminology as a metaphor for life. As a man with an eighth grade education, working for wrestling companies since his teen years, he has not written anything revolutionary in this book. Much like his first book, there are a lot of entertaining stories and anecdotes. I found them entertaining as a fan of old time wrestling. For the entertainment value of the stories, the book is worth its price.
While I feel this book is inferior to his first book, I enjoyed reading wisdom on life from Bobby Heenan. Few people realize that there is a human being behind the character he played. This is an opportunity to know the character of the real Booby Heenan. My hope for the future is that Heenan puts out a book of his best one-liners and insults from his wrestling career. A book like that would be a must for me.

Chair Shots and Other Obstacles: Winning Life's Wrestling Matches is an introspective look into the wit and wisdom of legendary professional wrestler and manager Bobby "The Brain" Heenan. "Chair shots" is a part of wrestling vernacular, but it is also a metaphor for setbacks and impediments that one experiences in life. Heenan has had his share of challenges - both personal and professional. He also has learned his share of lessons, but not in a formal education setting. The world has been his classroom and observing life around him, his curriculum. In his new role of "self-help guru," Heenan dispenses that wisdom through tangible and downright funny examples and anecdotes of a 59-year life and a five-decade career in professional wrestling. And what a career it has been. Heenan shares his many "chair shots," from battling pesky promoters and fanatical fans to combating cancer, which Heenan refers to as "the ultimate heel." Heenan also shares his seemingly infinite supply of humorous stories about many wrestling legends including: Dick the Bruiser, Andre the Giant, Vince McMahon, and Hulk Hogan. Finally, "The Brain" sums up his experiences with a last bit of advice: "Don't be a 'Bobby Heenan.' I'm not even saying to be a Ray Heenan. Just be a clown. That's the best advice I can give anyone...Now, when do I get paid?"
