I'm a big fan of ACC basketball, and I learned a lot about the history of the Big Four - stories about past teams, players, coaches that I hadn't heard before.
Just be aware that it's a survey, a collection of anecdotes spottily covering the last almost hundred years, and only so much can fit in the book. It's not a comprehensive history by any means and huge portions of that history are skipped over or only mentioned in passing; but it is well worth reading.

The Symmetry of Sailing: The Physics of Sailing for Yachtsman Review

The Symmetry of Sailing: The Physics of Sailing for Yachtsman
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
While written some 12 years ago this book is as fresh as a daisy. Some of the topics are still breathtaking in their implications for the future of sailing such as sailing dead downwind faster than the wind.
Already practical yachts have sailed straight into the wind, and it just awaits the technology to acheive this down wind trick.
As well there are straight forward guides as to how to handle a yacht in the real world of racing, as well as sobering discussions on the effects of breaking seas.
All in all it has made me a far more aware sailor with the knowledge to plan for exciting sailing and future fun.

Why must a boat make leeway in order to sail to windward? How can a helmsman prevent downwind rolling? Why is a sail able to produce a force at right angles to the wind direction? How do the motions of water particles in waves affect boat handling? These and many other important questions are addressed by the author in this detailed study of the motive forces of a yacht. The author has the rare gift of enabling his readers to relate the nautical phenomena with which they are so familiar to a physical explanation of how and why these occur. The first part covers downwind sailing, upwind sailing, sails, the hull, and the dynamic motion of a yacht. Part Two is devoted to more mathematical explanations of the same phenomena for those requiring a more scientific approach.

What It Means to Be a Tar Heel: Roy Williams and North Carolina's Greatest Players Review

What It Means to Be a Tar Heel: Roy Williams and North Carolina's Greatest Players

I thought Scott Fowler had already written the ultimate Carolina Basketball book in North Carolina Tarheels; Where Have You Gone, but this book is a real keeper - one you can read all the way through, or pick your favorites and read about them - What it meant and still means for them to have played basketball for North Carolina, and Scott's update of what the player is doing now. The layout is super. It begins in the fifties and takes each player's feeling for being a part of Tar Heel basketball and puts that feeling into words that only Scott can put together. I didn't know the team started with mostly New Yorkers brought by Frank McGuire to North Carolina. There's also a chapter on a popular Charlotte pastor who was part of the program. Great rainy-day reading!

What It Means to Be a Tar Heel: Roy Williams and North Carolina's Greatest Players by Scott Fowler explores the program's vast success and asks the simple question - What does it mean to be a Tar Heel? One person or one phrase cannot answer that question completely because so many different emotions encompass Tar Heel basketball. What It Means to Be a Tar Heel brings together all of their stories, as told by the most outstanding voices of the North Carolina program and guaranteed to enhance your passion for Tar Heel basketball. It's not just one tradition, one season or one game - it's the stories coming from the athletes and coaches who made the magic happen over the decades that capture the true essence of representing the University of North Carolina.

The Supergirls Review

The Supergirls
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The thesis for "The Supergirls" is obvious; Mike Madrid explores the depiction of women in the superhero world, and as one might expect, he concludes that more often than not, they have been mistreated. The text is presented in a very accessible fashion that does not pre-suppose much familiarity with the characters and stories he cites throughout, though I do feel he should have done a clearer job explaining a few major industry-wide events. For the most part, the book is structures chronologically, beginning with the late 1930s/early 1940s, and concluding in the 21st Century. Wisely, though, Madrid has constructed each chapter around a theme specific to each era. This means that each chapter is, essentially, its own thesis essay within the frame of the overall book.
I do wish Madrid had been more specific in naming the creators and editors of the stories he referenced. Most citations simply lay the blame for mishandled characters at the feet of their publisher, but more often than not he doesn't even identify which publisher was responsible for a character's woes. Maybe it's just a by-product of earning my degree in history, but I felt this was relevant information that the reader shouldn't have to supplement on his or her own. After all, it was individual men and women who made the choices about the content of the issues that hit the stands; Madrid suggests by omission of their names that some faceless order simply decreed how things would go.
Also conspicuously absent are any insights from anyone within the industry. A spattering of quotes taken from previously published interviews appear, but it seems that either Madrid was uninterested in, or more likely unable to, interview anyone for the purpose of this book. It may not seem to matter, but it gives this the feel of one of those "unauthorized biographies," where the subject is not actively represented to defend against any accusations against it.
Madrid bandies about spoilers for characters's fates throughout. You may never have read a single comic book featuring Ms. Marvel, and while Madrid may rouse your interest, he will likely quash it by the book's end, because there's a sense there's nothing for you to find in the material itself that he hasn't already told you. So, while this is written with the non-enthusiast in mind, it rather perversely lessens the need some readers will feel to explore the subject material for themselves.
Finally, it's worth mentioning that Madrid's scope is largely confined to a few characters from the DC Comics and Marvel Comics rosters; indie characters are largely ignored. And, strangely, Madrid discusses Batman as much as, or more than, any other character throughout. Batwoman, Catwoman, Batgirl and Wonder Woman are all evaluated vis a vis their relationships with the Caped Crusader. Which, really, is ironic given that Madrid argues throughout that women characters have been unfairly defined by the sensibilities of their male creators for their male readership.

A much-needed alternative history of American comic book superheroines - from Wonder Woman to Supergirl and beyond - where they fit in popular culture and why, and what these crime-fighting females say about the role of women in American society from their creation to now, and into the future. The Supergirls is an entertaining and informative look at these modern-day icons, exploring how superheroines fare in American comics, and what it means for the culture when they do everything the superhero does, but in thongs and high heels. Has Wonder Woman hit the comic book glass ceiling? Is that the one opposition that even her Amazonian strength can't defeat? Mike Madrid, a San Francisco - based refugee from the world of advertising, is a lifelong fan of comic books and popular culture. His goal is to inform and entertain readers with a new look at modern-day icons. He's popular culture editor for Exterminating Angel Press and the creator of www.heaven4heroes.com, where comic book fantasies come to life.

Victoria Beckham: Queen of America Review

Victoria Beckham: Queen of America
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book begins with Victoria Beckham's childhood and chronicles her early drive to be a performer, her audition with the Spice Girls, meeting David Beckham, the meteoric success of the Spice Girls, the birth of her son and fairy tale wedding to David Beckham. It also describes her struggles to launch a solo singing career after the Spice Girls, her early foray into the fashion industry, the accusations of her husband's infidelity and the Beckham's staunch denials of it. The book also includes the events that led to the Beckhams relocation to America.
This is an easy read. It does not whitewash the choices of Victoria Beckham and the Spice Girls when she ends her romantic relationship to concentrate on her career or when the Spice Girls fire their first manager (the man who put them together) to hire a new manager who eventually landed them lucrative commerical endorsements. The book paints a fair picture of Ms. Beckham -the strengths and the weaknesses; the nice and not-so-nice personality traits. I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I only gave it 4 stars because I felt some areas of her life were glossed over instead of explored in fuller detail. Maybe that was because substantiated material was not available or it was the author's choice. If you want a fair portrait of Ms. Beckham, read this book.

Snowed in with Grandmother Silk (Bccb Blue Ribbon Fiction Books (Awards)) Review

Snowed in with Grandmother Silk (Bccb Blue Ribbon Fiction Books (Awards))
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is one of those books that pulls at your heartstrings without being maudlin or overly in-your-face with sentimentality. It's nice to see a grandmother depicted in a children's story who is not the chubby, white-haired, sensibly-shoed, cookie-baking, story-reading archetype. Ruddy's grandmother wears furs and has perfectly coiffed hair. She doesn't know how to relate to a young boy, nor he to her. When they get snowed in together and have to rely on their own smarts to stay fed, warm, and entertained, they each have the opportunity to see another side of -- and appreciate -- the other. I love children's books that don't over explain or hit you on the head with a "Moral of the Story anvil." This book avoids that while still making its point, and with far more depth than so many kids' books today.

Hard Work: A Life On and Off the Court Review

Hard Work: A Life On and Off the Court
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Hard Work traces the improbable story of Roy Williams, now legendary head coach of Kansas and North Carolina. Roy's family had no money but his mother instilled values that would serve him for a lifetime.
What made this story fascinating was the way Williams planned his career trajectory. Knowing he wanted to be a great basketball coach, he turned down a scholarship at Georgia Tech so he could apprentice with Dean Smith of UNC. He worked all sorts of jobs to get through college. Later he worked all sorts of jobs to be on the staff with Dean Smith first as a volunteer, then as a part-time assistant.
After becoming a full time assistant coach at UNC, Roy still thought carefully about his career moves. He turned down several well-paid jobs till the right athletic director came calling from Kansas. Once established at Kansas, Roy rejected UNC's first offer to return as head coach. .
I got a little bogged down in the details of some games, because I am not a follower of these teams. My only quibble is that we don't get a sense of Coach Williams's coaching personality. He talks a little about what he said to teams in specific situations. But we don't get the same sense of personality as we do with the stories of other coaches, such as the legendary Pat Summitt. She also talks about hard work and she shows how she integrates her philosophy into the teams.
"
Williams's story can be viewed as a fable for career planning. Start early and stay fixed on your goal" is the message we get.
Williams found that his gambles paid off. Could he have become a big-time college coach another way? Possibly. But this path makes a great story. Recommended as a life story even if you're not a die-hard basketball fan.

Christina Kim provides a true insiders view of the LPGA. Her funny yet frank "confessions" confirmed a lot of what I thought, debunked a couple myths and yes, taught me a couple things I didn't know or think about. Her personal assessment of several women pros might surprise some folks. No spoilers here folks - buy the book!

Ms Anderson probably wrote this book to make a buck after Burt dumped her but who cares? I really enjoyed this honest, down to earth book about her relationship with Burt, her life and loves and most of all, I LOVED the many wonderful photographs. She's quite a lady too. Not once does she cry out, "poor ol' me". The book is honest and goes straight to the point. In other words, she doesn't moan and whine throughout it. She says it as she see's it. I like that. I'd recommend this book, definitely.

To Hate Like This Is to Be Happy Forever: A Thoroughly Obsessive, Intermittently Uplifting, and Occasionally Unbiased Account of the Duke-North Carolina Basketball Rivalry
Average Reviews:

Some of the best American nonfiction writing is about sports, and some of the best American writers are sportswriters.
Even though he isn't, to the best of my knowledge, a sportswriter (strictly speaking) Will Blythe has written an absolutely brilliant book about one of the most storied and heated rivalries in college basketball: UNC vs. Duke.
He has all the qualifications one needs to opine authoritatively: he was born and raised in North Carolina, he went to school at UNC, and like most of us who did (I fit that profile myself), he's a rabid Carolina basketball fan.
And while this book will be of obvious and direct interest to anyone who has spent some time on Tobacco Road--it is as authentically North Carolinian as a plate of barbecue and a glass of sweet iced tea--*any* college basketball fan, or any sports fan, really, or even anyone who appreciates the fine art of the wry personal memoir, would find "To Hate Like This..." engaging and delightful reading.

Sangre de Drago is a medicinal blood like latex tapped by indigenous people from a tree found in the rainforests of the Upper Amazon. The natives apply it externally to cuts to stop bleeding and accelerate healing, to disinfect wounds and skin infections, while forming a protective, flexible liquid bandage when dried. It is also used as a mouthwash for bleeding and ulcerations of the gums, tooth infections and to protect the teeth from cavities. Natives use it quite often to treat diarrhea, gastritis, and ulcers. To date, 4 U.S. patents have been filed on the sap, two for wound healing and two describing the antiviral activity, for use in treating animals and humans infected with respiratory syncytial virus, influenza A, B and C, and Herpes simplex virus. Scientists have since found that as a little as a single drop of Sangre de Drago can diminish pain resulting from insect bites and stings, lacerations, burns, and plant reactions for up to 6 hours. The investigators noted that the sap acts as an analgesic agent by stopping the activation and stimulation of sensory nerve fibers that send pain signals to the brain. These scientist pointed out that it also inhibits the inflammatory response of tissue to chemicals released by these same nerves, and that it does so when applied either externally on the skin or when mixed with water and swallowed to treat gastrointestinal problems.

Very well written account of a professional woman who embarks on a new and very unique part-time vocation. Ph.D researcher by day and a topless dancer by night. Author gives compelling insights into the life of a topless dancer, her co-workers, patrons and the "dark side" of that profession. It's amazing how quickly fear andadrenaline can kill a buzz. The first time, the trick is tobe just drunk enough to take your clothes off in public, but not quite so drunkas to fall off the stage, a complicated balance of blood volume to alcohol thatis no simple task for the uninitiated. My first time, dancing andcrawling around half-naked for the amusement of lonely software engineers andsalesmen, I came away with eight bucks, all ones. Still dazed and undecidedabout whether I should be humiliated or proud, I stepped off the stage tocongratulating pats and smiles. Since I can't take it back, I mayas well be proud. Without my glasses, faces aroundthe stage look blurry. It's just as well that I can't see. I've becomecompletely paranoid about being spotted by someone from my office. It's only amatter of time before some clandestine bachelor party comes up, and there I'llbe in all my glory. I can just imaginemy boss dragged in by some client or company man to schmooze, lookingcompletely bored and embarrassed until he sees me here. 'Excuse me, Dr. Bartlett, don't I pay you enough?'

Straight from the Hart Review

Straight from the Hart
Average Reviews:

I grew up watching Stampede Wrestling in the early 1980's and actually announced matches in BC & Saskatchewan for them in the mid to late 80's. The book is a good read, some pieces are a bit fudged, as are all bio books and there are some slanted parts that in my opinion, unfairly portray some people, That said, it's one of those personal things that would be Straight from the Hart (heart).
I know there was alot of turmoil during the times I was there as a magazine writer and actually to Hart's credit, I "borrowed' a few of his ideas and programs when I booked local shows.
Having read Bruce's book, Diana's book, Heath McCoy's book and Marsha Erb's book, I think it is a good addition to your Stampede Wrestling collection. I look forward to writing a book as well one day if I can sit still long enough as I enjoyed my tumble through many local indies!

In this thrilling memoir, the first son of wrestling steps out from behind the shadows of Calgary's fabled “Hart dungeon” to discuss his family and the cutthroat world of professional wrestling. Stories about growing up as Stu Hart's son and the brother of wrestling legends Bret “Hitman” Hart and Owen Hart offer insight into this wrestling dynasty and the close relationships with people such as Andre the Giant and Killer Kowalski. Detailing the rise of the family business and how it was destroyed by Vince MacMahon, how the tragic death of Owen rocked the family, and what really happened behind the scenes of the infamous “Montreal screwjob,” this gripping tell-all also provides information on how wrestling should be booked and the toll steroids and other drugs have taken on those close to Hart. The perfect book for fans, this account is chock-full of inside-the-ring stories and wrestling gossip.

High Heels And Homicide Review

High Heels And Homicide
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a huge Kasey Michael's fan--if I see a new release with her name on it, I grab it immediately. But especially, I've devoured the Maggie series--just LOVE them--and High Heels and Homicide is no exception. As the other reviewers have said, this story largely takes place at an English country estate where Maggie's book is being made into a film, and it's one entertaining ride!
So often, Michaels' stories take on the quality of a good Shakespearean comedy, where nobody is who they seem, and they're all a little bit whacky. With the lovable cast of secondary characters who appear throughout the series--naive Stering, 12-stepping Bernie, and Maggie's agent, Tabby--the reader feels like they've come home to their flawed, but wonderful family. Speaking of family, we finally get a glimpse of Maggie's in this book, which helps to explain some of her charming idiosyncrasies.
The sexual tension heats up between Maggie and Saint Just in this book; while at the same time, she's afraid to allow herself to love him (in the event he goes *poof* one day). She also struggles with Alex's 21st century behavior, and tries to reconcile his sins by having his 19th century character atone for them--which fails miserably. So, the line between fiction and reality blurs, which makes the story even more interesting.
Michael's voice is lively and witty. The story premise is unique. The characters are unforgettable. Five stars all the way!
