After spinal surgery I started wearing sturdy shoes. Since I have wide toes and a narrow arch and heel, I thought these gel mats might help with heel comfort. However, after just a few minutes one of the heel mats slid sideways and was very uncomfortable. This "one-size-fits-all" did not fit in my shoes.

Lore of Running, 4th Edition Review

Lore of Running, 4th Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I think it is important that readers understand precisely what this 931-page books IS, and what it is not. Dr Noakes is a trained physician, a professor of exercise science, and a highly published researcher in the field of exercise physiology. His meticulously researched book (the online references occupy over 100 pages) offers an authoritative compilation of the latest and best research to guide the intelligent coach or self-coached runner in the structuring of productive and safe training regimens. For those who lack a PhD in physiology but still want to understand WHY they should perform specific types of training, based on current research, this book is simply unsurpassed. If all you want is a "table" of training prescriptions with no grounding in research or explanation of validity, then look elsewhere: this book is not for you.
In my opinion, Dr Noakes has done an excellent job of extracting results from current research and translating them from the highly specialized language of sports physiology into language that the intelligent layperson can understand. Indeed, I found the book pitched at a slightly less technical level than the popular competitor by Martin and Coe---a book I hve also found to be invaluable.
Perhaps the most interesting feature of the Fourth Edition is Noakes' unapologetic challenge of THE prevailing paradigm in distance running; he questions the widely accepted belief that an individual's VO(2) max, or maximal oxygen uptake figure, is the key limiting factor in distance running performance. In a carefully argued Chapter 2, complete with dozens of references to research of the past decade to support his claims, Dr Noakes argues for an alternative "Central Governor Model" in which exercise capacity is primarily limited by coronary blood flow to supply oxygen to the heart. I cannot even present an outline of this fascinating alternative model in the brief space allocated here, but suffice it to say that Chapter 2 of his book, in which this theory is developed in detail, is alone worth the price of the book.

In addition to the physiology of training, there are entire chapters devoted to temperature regulation, ergogencic aids, injury prevention and treatment, apparel (emphasis on shoes), etc: all of the usual topics with which self-coached runners must eventually cope.
If I were to offer criticisms of the book for the sake of balance, there would be only two, both relatively minor.
(1) Chapter 6, entitled "Learning from the Experts" offers training programs from a number of famous past champions who raced over distances from 1 mile to the ultramarathon. However, as Dr Noakes points out clearly and often, many of these runners, almost inhumanly gifted with natural ability, became champions IN SPITE OF their obsessive, unbalanced training programs, and not because of them. For the person of average gifts, emulating the training programs of, say, Dave Bedford (who occasionally logged as many as 160--200 miles per week!)is a certain prescription for injury (as it ultimately was for Bedford). I would therefore suggest changing the title of this chapter to "Learning from the Champions." The accomplishments of these highly gifted people all too often had very little to do with "Expertise" in rationale training, as the current title suggests, and far more to do with natural endowment.
(2) Since Dr Noakes is willing to challenge the VO(2) max paradigm so openly, I think it is necessary that he offer some guidance on precisely what differences to the training program his alternative Central Governor Model implies. It is not easy for the non-specialist to see what amendments to training are implied by this alternative model; perhaps an addition to be incorporated into the Fifth Edition?
In summary, if you are a self-coached runner looking for an intelligent basis on which to construct a training program, then this 931-page book is comprehensive and has no real rival. If, on the other hand, you would prefer a 5-page pamphlet offering some training tables for the beginner, then I advise you to look elsewhere.

I read this book ages ago. It drove me insane. I simply hate this sort of book where outlandish things happen that don't make sense and it's supposed to be symbolic somehow but the symbolism goes right over my head.
Perhaps if I read it again, i'd get it, but it really was just rather mind-numbingly dumb in a way. Especially the afflictions of the other characters. And the main character's husband. Dang, he was irratating.

Meals in Heels Review

I love this cookbook! The recipes are delicious and no-fail, particularly the Pork and Prunes in Cider Vinegar! Hosting a dinner party can be rather stressful, but Ms. Joyce's menu suggestions and make-ahead advice put the fun back into the whole process. Not only are the recipes mouth-watering, but the illustrations make this book delightful to look at as well. I have other books by Jennifer Joyce, all of which I recommend, but none more highly than this one. I only wish Amazon made it easier to get her cookbooks in the US!

In "Meals in Heels", Jennifer Joyce draws on her years of experience and shares with the reader how to plan and prep ahead for entertaining with style and ease - and most importantly ensures you have time to slip on your heels, do your lippy and have a martini in hand when the guests arrive. If you've always wanted to be the hostess with the mostest, this book will show you the way. This title features a fresh and sassy design with a hint of humour. It uses glamorous line illustrations instead of photography.

Swede-O Deluxw Plantar Fasciitis Night Splint, Gray Review

Swede-O Deluxw Plantar Fasciitis Night Splint, Gray
Average Reviews:

I have a slightly wider than average foot for a woman, and that affected my ability to wear this splint. Although the splint is nicely padded and has nice straps to hold a foot securely, it doesn't leave enough space at the ball of the foot. I traded in plantar fascitis for pain at the ball of the foot. After several nights of waking up with what might be called bunion pain (but I don't have bunions), I gave up on this splint.

Hot On Her Heels Review

Hot On Her Heels
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
That appears to be the clear if unintended message of the brainless first chapter antics of our heroes in this otherwise intriguing premise. Grace Young-Mi Park, upstart publicist, has defied her family, defied her industry, and defied the odds, turning her once absolute nobody of an actor client into a household name, and at a party celebrating that success, she decides to do something else no one who knew her would ever expect her to do: strut right over in her five inch heels to the casual acquaintance she has been obsessing over and "announce" her interest in Nick Matthews, freelance reporter. Nick sees her coming over and is torn between desire and terror because it turns out that he has been obsessing over her as well, but he also knows that Grace is a "relationship chick", and he doesn't "do" relationships. Ever. However, desire quickly trumps common sense in both of them.
In fact it apparently trumps ALL sense because Grace proceeds to blurt out her client's most embarrassing secret, the one she has been paid to keep buried, to her brand new boyfriend, the reporter, IN THE CAB! Now, I suppose it would be too much to ask a reporter to look such a gift story in the proper orifice under the circumstances (after all, whichever reporter the cabdriver blabs to is going to be writing the story if Nick doesn't), but it shows a certain lack of class to be typing it up in the hotel room with her between bouts. When Grace awakens alone next morning she finds a thoughtful note, thanking her for a wonderful time and leaving her his phone number. Then she walks outside and is immediately confronted by a newspaper headline revealing her client's deepest, darkest secret. Sure enough the byline is Nicolas Matthews, and the story CITES HER AS THE SOURCE, thereby effectively destroying her career because while failing to prevent your client's dirty laundry from being aired is forgivable, doing the airing yourself is not.
Frankly, at this point I almost gave up on the book. While I can put up with a lot of human frailties in characters that are otherwise likable, I have a hard time with stupidity this abject. Besides I knew that the author would have to come up with something totally off the wall in order to get these two back together in even a halfway plausible way.
To her credit, Monica Newcomb does just that. Three months later his best friend and her best friend are getting married in Hawaii, and guess who the Best Man and Maid of Honor turn out to be? And this is going to be the Wedding from Hell: the bride is freaking out, just this side of total collapse, the stepmother of the groom is Evil Incarnate, the brother of the groom, Grace's ex, would like another opportunity to break her heart, Grace's one and only remaining client, the guy she accidentally exposed, is on the island engaging in more than usually stupid self-destructive behavior, which Nick's boss is pressuring him to cover, and finally the groom's insanely jealous ex is trying to sabotage the wedding.
Can our two heroes set aside their mutual stupidity and feelings about same long enough to work together and save their best friends' wedding? WITHOUT letting the panicky bride know? And in the process can they ever get it through their thick heads just how perfect they are for each other? Can love triumph over all? Well, the answer is obvious, but the fun (and it WAS a lot of fun I'm forced to admit) is in how they get there.

Grace Park, upstart LA publicist, has never asked a man out before. Korean-American culture has taught her two things: how to walk effortlessly in five-inch heels and how to let the men do the pursuing. But she's been intensely drawn to notorious player Nick Matthews from the first time they met.Nick has always avoided women like Grace, women he calls 'relationship chicks." But there was no doubt about it-Grace is his walking wet dream. When she offers herself to him on a platter, how can he resist the feast? He was afraid the same diet would grow boring and tasteless, but every moment with Grace is an adventure. After trusting Nick once and getting burned, she's afraid to try again. But when they're thrown together in an exotic Hawaiian setting, will Nick and Grace be able to let down their guards and take a chance on each other?

Sprich zuerst mit Ford. Review

Sprich zuerst mit Ford.
Average Reviews:

One has to wonder why Dearborn did not import more of their German products to Canada and the United States in the 50s,60s and 70s.
We auto enthusiasts were lead to believe that Detroit did not know how to build a good small(er) car. The attempts by Ford to develop a small car for the North American market were a disaster, witness the infamous Pinto, and the equally abysmal Maverick. Yet all Ford had to do was to import it's German line up. Who knows, if Canadian and American consumers had been able to buy a Ford Taunus, the early German Escort, and the German Granada, perhaps the Japanese might not have gained a foot hold in the North American market. Ford did successfully market the Capri through it's Lincoln/Mercury dealers, so one has to wonder why Ford management did not clue into the fact that they had ready made small car line up that could have been sucessful in the new world.

Climbing the Corporate Ladder in High Heels Review

Climbing the Corporate Ladder in High Heels

I started reading this book with some concerns about being hit with the same old rah-rah-you-can-do-it-woman! text, reminding us how great we are and how we can have it all...but forgetting to mention how we can achieve it. In Archambeau's book, I found a thought-provoking, often funny, and always interesting guide for women who want it all...or even part of it...without suffering the guilt (or even the dread) we're too often expected to carry on our backs. Archambeau reminds again and again that "success" is not a dirty word and that the balancing act doesn't always have to topple us over. The recurring message in this book was not simply You can do it! but...Here's how!

Favoring neither the "in-your-face" aggressive tactics of the "break-through-the-glass-ceiling" school of thought, nor the "sugar-and-spice-and-everything-nice" little-girl approach, Climbing the Corporate Ladder in High Heels shows women how to be outstandingly successful and personally actualized without becoming just like men. There are 63 million working women in America, but only eight are top company CEOs. While women make up nearly 50 percent of the workforce, working women perform 90 percent of household and childcare duties. Women are left wondering, "Do I have to make a choice between my career or my life?" This book answers that question. Climbing the Corporate Ladder in High Heels is the first book to teach women: • How to climb the corporate ladder and have fun doing it. • How to use 12 of their natural roles and talents to advance in Corporate America. • How to thrive in a downsizing and outsourcing global economy. • How to achieve both a rewarding career and a fulfilling life. • What to do when they hit the glass ceiling.

Visco-Elastic Gel Heel Spur Pad Insoles
Average Reviews:

I recently was diagnosed with a heel spur and bought these pads. They are great! It has really reduced the pain I feel in walking. I can tell the difference by taking them out and trying to use the shoes normally - hurts. But put them back in and it's nice and squishy. The indented spot on the pad lines up well with where my heel spur is.
They are very sticky on the back side, which helps to keep them in place. If they collect dirt, you can rinse them off and let them dry - they are sticky as new again! I even stick them onto my flip-flops to wear around the house and they stay in place.
Worth every penny :)

Modern surfaces, such as concrete, asphalt and floors are hard. When your feet land on them, the force of the impact is often more than your system can naturally absorb. The shock travelsback up through the body, stressing and eventually damaging joints and causing fatigue.Excess weight, athletics, repetitive activities and standing for long periods can aggravate thesituation. The heel strike shock particularly affects your lower skeletal frame --your knees, hipsand lower back as well as your feet. In the long run, it can inflict pain, limit activity and in somecases, require joint replacement. Due to fashion trends and cost cutting by manufacturers modern footwear rarely has sufficientcushioning. Most sports shoes which should offer better protection are rarely suitable for workor business use and studies have shown that most sports shoes lose much of their cushioningeffect within a short time. For years, scientists have studied the problem and looked forpossible solutions. Bio-engineers, orthopedic surgeons and physical therapists saw that, ifthey could find a way to place a shock absorber between foot and the ground, the energywould be diffused before it damaged the joints. For those already afflicted, such shockabsorbers would help relieve pain and prevent further damage. Studies were designed, experiments were conducted, materials tested. The results allsuggested that visco-elastic polymers were the optimum materials for underfoot cushioning. These synthetic materials, which are both dense and elastic, proved remarkably able toabsorb the shock of heel strike. Taking up less space in the shoe than conventional foammaterials, visco-elastic polymers are the most efficient form of under-foot cushioning availabletoday. In fact you would need up to 15 drug store insoles to equal the cushioning effect of onevisco-elastic insole. In tests that actually measured the amount o

The Book of Exercise & Yoga for Those with Osteoporosis: Using Movement & Meditation for Better Bones, Balance, and Posture Review

The Book of Exercise and Yoga for Those with Osteoporosis: Using Movement and Meditation for Better Bones, Balance, and Posture
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a yoga teacher who is starting to specialize in the elderly. Some of the books for balance and osteoporosis in particular are simply too advanced for the people who have the greatest need. All can benefit greatly from this book. But those who have had cancer, bone injuries or advanced osteoporosis often can't perform the exercises aimed at healthier and more fit people who are interested more in prevention.
This book has quite substantial sections offering a wide variety of exercises aimed at those with the most restricted movement as well as those ready for more challenging exercises. I was particularly pleased with those which could be performed from a chair.
This is a life-changing book. It strengthens muscle strength, improves balance and posture, so that they can be more mobile and lead more independent lives. They look better, feel better physically and emotionally. I'm convinced that these exercises can help prevent falls and serious injury, which can have such devastating consequences.
I can't recommend this book more.
