I've been hearing about knitting socks 2-at-a-time for a while now, but no description ever quite got the concept across to me. This clear, beautifully photographed book FINALLY got the idea through my head and into my fingers. My family will be so happy that I won't abandon sock designs after only knitting the first one anymore. The instructions alone are worth the price, but the included patterns are an incredible bonus. I'll be knitting socks out of this book for a long, long time to come (and all the pairs will be finished at the same time and they'll MATCH, hallelujah!).

Sock knitters everywhere know the frustration of Second Sock Syndrome. It goes something like this: A cute new sock pattern and soft, foot-warming yarn lead to many happy knitting hours, resulting in . . . ONE sock. The first sock is done (and it's adorable!) but pattern distraction sets in. Who wants to knit the same project all over again? There are so many new projects waiting to be discovered.Melissa Morgan-Oakes ends the drudgery of the second sock by showing knitters how to cast on and knit two socks at one time on one long circular needle! Her method is captured in step-by-step photographs, clearly showing knitters how to turn out two socks at the same time. Goodbye to lonely, abandoned single socks. Hello to unlimited pretty pairs, knit on one needle (often finished on the same day), and worn with pride and that gratifying sense of accomplishment.Oakes is a dedicated knitter, knitwear designer, and knitting instructor who has known the frustration of Second Sock Syndrome. Her easy-to-learn technique enables sock stitchers to adapt any pattern to her two-at-a-time method. But before experimenting with other patterns, readers will want to try Morgan-Oakes's 15 original designs. Fun and creative, they include simple to complex choices, a variety of yarn weights, and designs for women, men, and children.Socks are small, relatively inexpensive, and interesting to knit - a favorite portable choice of busy knitters. Keep the fun in sock-stitching with the innovative new technique that produces two socks - yes, that's one sock for each foot - at the very same time!Consumer testimonial -
"I am a new knitter and purchased 2-at-a-time Socks. Perfect! This is a book is the best investment I've ever made! I have a lovely pair of socks ... for the first time! Very comprehensive instructions, as well as a very easy-to-understand glossary in the back. I recommend this book to anyone interested in knitting socks. So much easier than the double pointed needles! - Deborah, Colorado Springs, CO

Once you've knit each comfy pair for yourself, why not make a friend's tootsies feel terrific, too? The crew socks, ankle socks, and socks with faux fur cuffs are by far the best gifts you can give. And by the way, they're also fun to knit! Easy Stripes and Color Round-Up are knit in the round using two circular needles. The other three designs (Oh, the Frill!, Toe to Top, and Tall or Short) are knit on double-pointed needles.

Easy Knitted Socks: Fun and Fashionable Designs for the Novice Knitter Review

Easy Knitted Socks: Fun and Fashionable Designs for the Novice Knitter

Instructions are included for using double-pointed needles or magic loop technique on one long circular needles.
Projects include: baby bootees, toddler slippers, felted baby slippers, felted adult slippers, socks knit flat and seamed up, basic tubular socks on 3 needles, spiral socks with no heel to turn, ballerina style slippers, lace knee socks held up by ribbons, striped lace socks knit on 3 needles (shown on cover), beaded leg warmers, mock cable socks, actual fair isle socks (not faked with patterned yarn!) and several other lace or textured patterns.
One drawback, perhaps, is that in including so many forms of sock-knitting, there aren't actually very many patterns of actual socks knit in traditional styles. And while it claims to be for "novice knitters" it may intimidate real novices. On the other hand, there is something for everyone here.

Knitting Circles around Socks: Knit Two at a Time on Circular Needles Review

Knitting Circles around Socks: Knit Two at a Time on Circular Needles

(More customer reviews)
Ms. Gillingham does a great job describing how to knit two socks cuff down on two circular needles. Some of the best things are, finally, an illustraton of the anatomy of a sock. Finally, finally, finally, someone shows exactly what the gusset is on a sock. If you've never seen a hand-knit sock, only store-bought, you will be hard pressed to figure out what the gusset is. Here is a picture. Her other illustrations are also very good, particularly of the Kitchener graft.
Her instructions are very clearly written. It's obvious that English is her second language in the sense that she is very careful and precise in its use. Nothing is taken for granted. This is an excellent quality in a book of instructions on a process.
The reason I give this book only three stars is that I found the title misleading. If Ms. Gillingham (or her publisher) had specified that this was a book on knitting socks on TWO circular needles it would have been clear. As it is, I had the impression that it was a book about knitting socks on circular needles. This would normally have included knitting on one long circular needle, aka "Magic Loop." There is no mention of the magic loop method in the book.
The other star was lost in the lack of any toe-up sock patterns. Toe-up is my preferred way of knitting socks because I have a number of relatives with very long feet. When you knit toe-up you can be sure to have the foot (at least!!!) completed before running out of yarn, then you use up the rest of the yarn to knit the leg and cuff. I know that most people are accustomed to knitting socks cuff down, but those of us who knit toe-up shouldn't be denied out of hand.
This said, it is a good beginner book and knitting two socks at a time is truly a no brainer. Even if you've never knit socks before in your life, it will not be a problem to start two at a time with this book.

Homespun, Handknit: Caps, Socks, Mittens & Gloves Review

Homespun, Handknit: Caps, Socks, Mittens and Gloves

I discovered this book as a beginning spinner, and I was thrilled with the opportunity to see so many different small projects which would let me experiment with a variety of yarns. I soon realized that I kept coming back to it for information on knitting techniques, for inspiration for gifts, and for the well designed small projects. The editors inspired me to branch out in my knitting, to try hats and socks, and to try new techniques in my spinning as well. Although each project is designed by a spinner for handspun yarn (and includes information on spinning a suitable yarn), the editors also provide excellent recommendations for substituting commercially available yarns

Kristin Knits Review

KRISTIN KNITS will pop off the shelf at you and if you love colorful knits, it's bound to be love at first sight. More than just a book of patterns, it's a primer for designing with color. The 27 patterns are of simple construction but show you color techniques that can be incorporated in your own design. Fair isle techniques, embellishments and surface decorations are among the featured elements.
This is a bright book with spacious layout, organized by type of project: scarves and afghan, hats, socks, gloves and mittens, and sweaters. The photos are beautiful, the patterns presented clearly in a tabular format that looks very easy to follow. The sweaters are women's sizes.
Kristin Nicholas is most deservedly held in the highest regard in knitting circles. Some of my most satisfying projects were from her 1995 book Knitting The New Classics: 60 Exquisite Sweaters From The Studios Of Classic Elite, a book containing many complex construction and texture elements. That brings me to my only reservation about KRISTIN KNITS, and it is definitely a personal preference: while I always reach for the books with eye-popping color designs, it's the construction and texture of a project that hold my interest.
My plan is to knit some of the smaller projects in this book and see whether the great colors take my knitting in a new direction. At least I'll have some bright and beautiful gifts out of the exercise!
