Training Your Dog: The Step-by-Step Manual (Howell reference books) Review

Training Your Dog: The Step-by-Step Manual (Howell reference books)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Hello! I'm An obedience trainer and instructor for obedience titles at AKC Obedience trials! This book might be older than some but take my advice! This book is written by an experienced trainer and handler. Most of all, I have trained several canine's by the methods listed in this book, and they do work. I have shown canine's, and won CD tiles at AKC events by using these methods, and have documented proof! Mrs. Fisher, which is one of the authors, holds a degree in animal psychology and gives you an in depth look into the mind of the canine...The book has great details in the why's of different methods of, reading your dog, and trying to understand why he thinks the way he does! On my very first obedience trial for an Obedience title, the dog got his first Qualification for CD Title when he turned 6 months of age. By using the methods in this manual he recieved his CD Title by the time his 3rd Show rolled around. It's a very good manual for both, the beginning trainer, and experienced trainer alike!!! My highest recommendations go out on this book!!!

The Rider's Fitness Program Review

The Rider's Fitness Program
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a week-end rider, I eagerly anticipated the release of this book because I wanted to target my riding muscles to help me improve.
The first disappointment came when I realized I needed to belong to a gym. They do give you home alternatives for some, not all, of the exercises but many are not workable, requiring anchor points at specific heights for the resistance band alternatives. I supposed I could tap a bunch of screw eyes into one wall and the ceiling, but I bet my landlord wouldn't be too happy!

There was also a pretty complete set of equipment you were expected to own; benches, free weights, weight bars, ankle and wrist weights, exercise balls, medicine balls, resistance bands, tilt boards, rollers, etc. The helpful web link to sources of the equipment took me straight to one of the author's equipment sales web page. I had about half the equipment needed and am being resourceful for the things I don't have. Free weights, exercise balls, medicine balls, resistance bands and tilt boards are all going to be needed.
The second disappointment was most of the exercises were the same old same old. Some of them were packaged a bit differently and toward the end of the six week series, the exercises look more interesting, combining strength, balance and posture in one exercise. (I have read the whole book and have completed week one)
At first, I thought the layout of the book was a bit awkward, but as I began to use it, it bacame clear the variations in routine (One of the things I really like about the book) makes the layout necessary. There is a warm-up/stretch section without a lot of instruction, so I just used what I thought was appropriate for that days workout.
A good bit of information is included in the Introduction so read it carefully.
I was hoping for something a bit more revolutionary, but if you are lifting weights and doing a core based workout such as Pilates, you won't find anything different in this book.
I am planning on doing the whole six week series as directed, so if something exciting occurs down the road, I'll come back and amend my review.

Here is the perfect book for beginning riders who are using muscles they never knew they had before, advanced riders who want to stay in top form (especially as they get older), and weather-bound riders who can't get out during the winter but want to be fit when spring arrives. The Rider's Fitness Program details a fun and effective six-week program that strengthens the muscles riders use while improving overall balance, flexibility, and coordination. The book features more than 85 exercises designed to help new riders get over the aches and pains of getting started and experienced riders hone their skills and technique and prevent injuries. The ultimate goal, of course, is to achieve "oneness" with the horse. The routines are flexible, so individuals can customize the workout they need for jumping, dressage, reining, endurance, polo, or rodeo. The exercises are accompanied by step-by-step photographs that demonstrate how to perform each action properly (with an emphasis on safety). The exercises are progressive, from basic to advanced, and suitable for riders at all fitness levels. The authors also include fundamental information on diet, general health and safety, and what clothing and equipment are necessary. The Rider's Fitness Program is a comprehensive handbook for riders of all experience levels, with workout routines for every type of riding discipline.

DogPerfect, Second Edition Review

DogPerfect, Second Edition
Average Reviews:

This book seems to be an excellent book for training your dog -- big or small. The author takes you from trying to understand your dog, to simple things you should need to train your dog, the first basic commands, moving on to harder things. At the end the author also outlines a variety of items to discipline your dog if your dog has problems of barking, chewing etc.
Not only is the book detailed, but set up in a way that you can easily read. Lists are very helpful in this book. The book also has interesting antecdotes about the author's experience with dogs which are separated out so that people who don't want to read them don't have to read them.
The content is good to help because it doesn't limit your options to one way of correcting your dog, but gives other ideas for those of us who are only a little creative. The book even talks about what games are good to play and has given me a few ideas for games for me and my dog.
My only problem with the book is the plug for a specially designed leash that the author sells. It does sound like a good leash for a dog that is kept inside most of the time. My dog is mostly outside and so the training with the special leash doesn't look that practical to me.
I think the best part of the book is the constant encouragement to the dog owners. The author tells us that training a dog depends on our attitude and does everything possible to keep our attitude to be helpful for training our dogs. One of the better dog-training books I have found.

Racing Weight Quick Start Guide Review

Racing Weight Quick Start Guide
Average Reviews:

I can't comment on the effectiveness of the methodology outlined here. It makes good sense, basically how to increase fat burning to reduce your weight while still allowing for base training. However, the setup is for you to calculate your nutritional needs based on a calculated number of calories needed, using the workouts in the book. Supposedly you can go to racingweight.com and find calculators that will let you calculate, for your specific starting weight, the number of calories you will burn using the workouts in the book. Unfortunately, when you go to racingweight.com and search for calculators, you find exactly one article, which has a link to an offsite calculator that has absolutely no info about the training plans in the book. From that perspective, it's a complete fail. And since the entire plan is supposed to be based on a specific caloric deficit, of which this is the basis, it makes the whole effort futile...

Speed Train Your Own Bird Dog Review

Speed Train Your Own Bird Dog
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this book when I unexpectedly had a new german shorthair puppy to train. I purchased it because it had an extensive section on puppy training and I was anxious to get started. I also soon purchased several other bird dog training books, including some very famous ones, but I kept coming back to Larry Muellers book. I like his attitude toward dogs and his willingness to go against commonly held beliefs and techniques. He is a very obsevant man who incorporates the latest dog psychology into his obsevations. The emphasis is on avoiding mistakes or techniques which cause setbacks and cost you time to correct. This gives you a lot of insight into dogs minds and training in general. Most importantly every technique he recommended WORKED! I cannot say that about any of the other books. Also every thing that he said to avoid that I did not manage to avoid cost me time. He was right. I have repeatedly received compliments on my dogs performance and manners even by pros. The biggest factor in that was this book. This is an excellent book to purchase before acquiring a pup. His puppy training section(2-4months old) is extensive, excellent and effective. He also has techniques for selecting a pup which make a lot of sense.

Beyond Basic Dog Training Review

Beyond Basic Dog Training
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Beyond Basic Dog Training is a well-written book filled with practical advice. Every page screams with common sense in dog handling. Most importantly, the author's attitude is hard to beat. Diane L. Bauman, through the text, proves herself to be humane, experienced, and serious about dog obedience training.
The author parts company with most other dog trainers when she says that a dog obeys not because the dog wishes to please its master. Rather, she says, the dog obeys only when the dog finds that obeying is in its best interest. Additionally, the author emphasizes that the best way to train a dog is to train it so it UNDERSTANDS the commands. To make sure the dog understands, the handler is taught to "proof" each exercise. Instead of being taught patterns that may fail when distractions are present, the "thinking" dog will perform, because the dog KNOWS what it is supposed to do.
Finally, Diane L. Bauman's record of achievement as a dog trainer must be highlighted. Among other awards, her Golden Retriever, Charo, retired from dog obedience competitions with six perfect scores of 200, and is a three-time Gaines Superdog winner.

Since its initial publication, Beyond Basic Dog Training has achieved well deserved recognition as an innovative, unique guide to obedience instruction. Obedience authority Diane Bauman's proven training philosophy asserts that the time has come to go beyond training dogs and start teaching them to please us. This has made a vital difference for those who use her method-and for dogs taught by it to succeed in competitive canine sports. In this new, updated edition, Bauman presents the most current knowledge on canine learning patterns. Believing that dogs learn by trial and error, Bauman provides a novel approach that encourages dogs to learn by removing corrections for incorrect responses. As a result, dogs do not fear failure and are taught to exercise options in a quest for the desired behavior.Bauman shows you how to become a "thinking handler" who can train the "thinking dog." Her remarkable ability to view training from the dog's perspective translates into an invaluable tool for building effective communication between you and your dog.The instruction in this authoritative guide is behind Gaines "Superdogs," numerous obedience trial champions, and a host of other canine successes. If you want your dog to be happy, confident stimulated, and secure in the obedience ring, Beyond Basic Dog Training is the book of choice.

Clicker Training for Obedience: Shaping Top Performance-Positively Review

Clicker Training for Obedience: Shaping Top Performance-Positively
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I live with and train Smooth Fox Terriers, considered by many to be one of the hardest breeds to train in obedience. Since I started using the methods suggested in this book, I've had tremendous success with my dogs.
My oldest male, who earned his CD during my pre clicker training period, after much hard, frustrating work, learned "go out, sit" in 3 short, fun, easy lessons. And, he learned to love to retrieve his dumb bell, finding what others call the "forced retrieve" to be one of his favorite games. And, that is the key. Having fun while learning.
The dog who has fun learning a behavior will carry that behavior over into daily life, and, for me and my dogs, Clicker Training for Obedience is helping us achieve just that. It helped me create a training program that is fun for us all.
The presentation of each segment for training a behavior is such that a trainer new to training can follow along and achieve success.
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in having a happy, well trained dog. Not just for competition, but for daily life as well.

A really fantastic book that teaches you as promised, everything about running. You'd think it is as simple as get off the couch and start moving your feet. Once you start running, there are a ton of questions that arise, from
1) what is the best type of shoe to choose
2) How often should you drink water (every 20-30 min, more if it's hot)
3) How fast is too fast (you should be able to carry a conversation, if you are training for distance)
4) How and when should you try to train to get your speed up (not recommended for beginners who haven't been running for more than 1 year consistently 20 miles a week or more)
5) How often should you change your shoes? (Every 500 miles or every 4-6 months or so).
There are also tons of details on common physical problems that arise, why they arise, and how to handle. This is perfect for those that are just learning and want to make sure not to hurt themselves.

Schutzhund: Theory and Training Methods (Howell reference books) Review

Schutzhund: Theory and Training Methods (Howell reference books)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There aren't many books about Schutzhund available in bookstores or on the Web, and so Barwig & Hilliard's excellent volume must often function both as a manual for serious trainers and an introduction to the sport for the curious. It is in the latter regard that "Schutzhund: Theory and Training Methods" leaves something to be desired. There is no real overview of Schutzhund as a recreational activity, nor is there any well-reasoned explanation of why anyone would want to pursue a Schutzhund career with their dog. A curious non-participant who reads the book would probably decide that Schutzhund is much too arduous and complex to be any fun at all. While Schutzhund certainly is demanding, the rewards of training and owning a Schutzhund-titled dog--the "process", one might say--is where the joy lies. The authors could have made a much better case in this regard.
On the other hand, this book is a gold mine for the serious trainer. While different training directors espouse different methods for schooling dogs in Schutzhund, Barwig and Hilliard consistently advocate time-honored methods in all three Schutzhund disciplines (tracking, obedience, protection) that are neither too trendy nor too harsh. A dog (and handler!) with the basic "equipment" to compete in the sport would not likely go wrong by following any of the advice given here. Considering the bewildering array of training methods that already exist in the Schutzhund world, this is a remarkable accomplishment in itself. And when coupled with the authors' accessible prose style, this is an important book that should not be overlooked by any Schutzhund trainer--or any curious reader willing to read between the lines.

The Koehler Method of Dog Training Review

The Koehler Method of Dog Training
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
No training method works for all dogs, but the Koehler method comes close. I read this book thoroughly before using it to train my dog, an American Pit Bull Terrier. I recommend it on the basis of the results I achieved with my own dog. My Pit Bull is a happy, calm, sweet animal who is well behaved and trustworthy even in crowded, distracting public places. Please note the notarized statement in this book attesting to the author's success in training thousands of dogs. A well-trained dog is a joyful companion and something to be proud of. As for the "brutality" ascribed to this training method by its detractors, I "corrected" my dog with the choke collar only three or four times - always for something potentially dangerous (with a big and strong dog like a pit bull) such as running wildly on the long training lead. Most of the time, during the routine exercises, the dog corrects himself. Essentially he is given a choice between discomfort and comfort. If he makes the right choice he avoids discomfort. This does not assume the dog is human - it respects the dog's intelligence and ability to make choices. This book helps you to train a dog to be obedient off leash under highly distracting conditions. I knew my pit bull had graduated the day I was allowing her to run around on a 30' lead and another, loose pit bull appeared out of nowhere. This animal ran up on my dog, she surged after it, and the worn lead parted company with her collar! I called my dog to me, and she came and stood in front of me. I told her to sit, and she did so, allowing me to tie the broken ends of the leash together - with this maniac nuisance dog running circles around us all the while.
I tried using food to motivate my dog but she became intensely focussed on the food rewards in my pocket. In Koehler training, the dog is supposed to be attentive towards you, not your pocket! With the firm foundation of obedience training, I am now able to teach my dog all kinds of tricks. Trick training is FUN training so I have no problem using food rewards to teach tricks. My dog can jump through a hoop, etc. However, obedience training is serious business that can one day save your dog's life. I feel the Koehler method is particularly valuable with big, strong breeds such as pits and rottweilers that can cause so much trouble when they are NOT properly trained. I thank this book for the wonderful, reliable pit bull friend I have today.
