Snowboarding Skills: The Back-To-Basics Essentials for All Levels Review

Snowboarding Skills: The Back-To-Basics Essentials for All Levels

After a few days in the slopes, I purchased this book along with "The Illustrated Guide to Snowboarding" (mostly due to the positive reviews here). After reading both books from cover to cover, it is my conclusion that "Snowboarding Skills" is, without a doubt, a better book.
It seems that most snowboarding books either describe techniques through indirect principles or abstract concepts such as "... turn your upper body into the new direction" (Illus. Guide). Few books went into the *absolutely* essential details of how and why a board turns. Hands down, the pivoting exercise in the "Snowboarding Skills" book is far more helpful to my snowboarding that the entire 312 pages of the Illustrated Guide. Now that I know how to turn a snowboard, the pictures of actual snowboarders with annotated "force vectors" tell me exactly *how* to implement a move -- the art is in the detail.
This is not to say that the "Illustrated Guide to Snowboarding" is a bad book. It just covers a bit more than "Snowboarding Skills" and goes into a little less technical detail. I use it as more of a secondary reference. For beginner to intermediate, this book is an absolute must.

This book really helped me prepare for my first day snowboarding. I used a lot of the techniques presented on my first day. The authors gives great tips and there are tons of photos. She explains everything really well. There is also a section on what to look for when buying equipment which will come in handy once you get better at snowboarding. It is a great book for women because it is written for women from a woman's point of view. Extremely helpfull!

Go Snowboard: Read It, Watch It, Do It (GO SERIES) Review

Go Snowboard: Read It, Watch It, Do It (GO SERIES)

This book deserves 5 starts but I can't update my rating on second edit.
My background is 9 years of snowboarding and I can bomb down the mountain really fast but I bought this book because I want to improve my carve and steeps control. The unique DVD/book combination was appealing to me.
Compared to other snowboarding books I read, this book's approach is easy to follow and teaches specific drills for carving.
I have taken the carving drills to the mountain for a day and I already feel the difference. (I actually marked my board's corners with stick-on A, B, C, and D letters)
Beginners will benefit from the first 2 chapters and they cover most of the book but the reality of the sport is that you have to get out there for minimum 2 consecutive days before you link a few turns.
I felt that the riding fakie section is way too short but following the pressure point drills makes something that seems hard easy.
The freestyle section is OK but doesn't teach any turns and I really want to find a good drill to get my first 180 in. However, the teaching on how to do ollies described in this book is better than any others from the internet or other books.
One thing that might make the book a little confusing for some, the instructor in the book rides goofy (like me) and if you ride regular it might be a little hard to picture what to do. However, if you want to see him riding regular foot, get a mirror and watch the video in the mirror.

Snowboarding Review

After a fairly aggravating first-time try at snowboarding last winter (lousy snow, mediocre instruction, ... rental equipment), I got this book, among several others. Ms. Older lays out the basics of getting started in this sport in clear, jargon-free language, covering areas such as proper clothing to wear, boots, bindings, the right board, beginning exercises and then actual riding technique. After reading this book, I have some hope that even a middle-aged guy like me, with a somewhat beat-up body, can eventually make it down a mountain in one piece.

No-Fall Snowboarding: 7 Easy Steps to Safe and Fun Boarding Review

No-Fall Snowboarding: 7 Easy Steps to Safe and Fun Boarding

As an avid snowboarder, I can honestly say that this book is the bible for snowboarding. I am not one for reading directions, and that's not what this book is all about. Anyone who has failed miserably in their snowboarding lessons should read this book. It does not have to be a painful experience.
Even if you are already a snowboarder, as I am, or don't think you enjoy snowboarding, like my sister who's now convinced after I gave her this book. There's something for everyone to learn here.
Also, I read Jorge's review on Amazon before purchasing the book and I disagree with it completely. First of all, the reviewer didn't even read the book! How can you criticize something you don't know anything about?
Secondly, as for the AASI quote, that actually comes from the AASI's OWN LITERATURE--from their official magazine for members. As quoted in the book.
Danny Martin's technique actually IS different from AASI's: in fact, in the book, they evaluate the AASI technique against their's with the leading snow-sports physicist to see which is more effective at creating balance. That's actually a VERY interesting chapter. Not the kind of thing found in most snowboarding books.
In any event, I found the book to be very insightful. Read it and judge it for yourself.
