Dead Over Heels Review

Dead Over Heels
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an anthology containing three short stories from three different series.
Undead and Wed: A Honeymoon Story - Takes place a few days after the events in the book Undead and Uneasy. Betsy, Queen of the Vampires, and her new hubby, Sinclair, head off to New York for their Honeymoon. When they arrive they discover it's no longer just the two of them on this vacation. They have some King and Queenly duties to tend to while sharing their Honeymoon time with their unwanted guests.
Betsy's hilarious antics and Sinclair's witty comments and tolerance make this a very funny short story. I laughed out loud several times.
Survivors - Takes place a few days after the events in Swimming without a Net (Fred the Mermaid, Book 2). Television Survivor Guru, Con, finds himself shipwrecked and stranded in the middle of the ocean when Reanesta, one of the Undersea Folk, comes to his aid.
Another laugh out loud story with a fabulously sarcastic and sassy heroine. It was equal parts charming and comical.
Speed Dating Werewolf Style Or, Ow, I Think You Broke The Bone - This story also takes place a few days after the events in Undead and Uneasy, but involves the Wyndham Werewolves instead of the Betsy Vampire Entourage. Cain is getting sick of watching her friends find mates and have cubs, so she decides it's her turn. She enlists the help of her longtime best friend, Saul, to help her find a man, er, Werewolf. He sets her up on several "dates."
The clever repartee between Cain and Saul and their obvious and easy affection for each other makes this an extremely entertaining read. Saul is sweet and a little bumbling, Cain is brassy and determined.
This was a brilliant anthology, easily one of the best I have ever read. The three stories had this reader visiting her favorite MJD series and subject matters, Vampires, Mermaids and Werewolves. I was thrilled to have another Wyndham Werewolf story, though I long for the day when she will give them their own full length novel again. MaryJanice Davidson writes the funniest stories and one-liners. Her ability to make me laugh, repeatedly, is only one of the reasons I adore her writing. Her characters are larger than life and her imagination is supreme. Hilariously fun!
Cherise Everhard, May 2008

Magee is the account executive of Sinclair Advertising and wants to gain business with CycleMania. When Justin suggests his outrageous plan to Magee, she agrees to be "Tina". She wants to earn the new title, Account Director, by gaining the contract with CycleMania, rather than being the daughter of the boss. In order to ensure the success of the weekend, they have a practice date and make some cheat sheets. Everything turns out to be disastrous during the Willoughbys' visit but the worst thing is that the real Tina Johnston suddenly shows up at Justin's cabin.

Head Over Heels (Marine, Book 1) Review

Head Over Heels (Marine, Book 1)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
An enjoyable introduction to what looks to be a welcome trilogy about three former Marine buddies. This one takes place in Fossil Washington, and concerns the murder of Crystal Davis, the owner of the Baker Street Honky Tonk, her late father's tavern. The whodunnit itself wasn't that complex, since the reader is quickly able to eliminate most of the possible suspects, but it serves to provide the framework for the meeting between Crystal's sister, Veronica Davis who is a restoration specialist, and Cooper Blackstock, an ex-Marine of mysterious means and also the man hired to run the tavern. Their working relationship and developing romance is the main focus of the story.
Veronica and Cooper are both running from their past, yet both wind up in the town where they've been hurt the most. Each has unresolved issues with their deceased parents, issues which molded both of them and which also serve as a stumbling block to their growing attraction to one another. There is also the complication of Crystal's young daughter Lizzy - she's now motherless, her father has been charged with the murder, and now he's jumped bail. Adding to all that is the fact that Veronica now has to deal with settling Crystal's affairs, providing a stable homelife for her niece, and temporarily help out waitressing at the tavern (putting her in close proximity to Cooper, but also bringing back unpleasant memories of her teenage years). To make matters worse, Lizzy's father, Eddie Chapman, is also Cooper's half-brother, a fact which he has omitted telling Veronica. There is also a nicely done secondary romance between Veronica's best friend Marissa, a widowed mother of three, and a local businessman named Kody, who is afraid to commit.
This story was a bit more serious in tone than some of Ms. Andersen's other books due to the issues raised, but it still contains her excellent dialogue, amusing scenes, and fine character development. Unlike some authors, all of her main characters seem real, their behaviors true. They don't make the reader cringe in disbelief. The children in the story are real children, not discardable plot devices, but kids you could easily take to your heart. The relationship between Veronica and Coop flashed nicely, both in language and deed. Needless to say, both are good looking, smart and sexy, with strong independent streaks. I'd say this book is a keeper.

Head over Heels Review

Head over Heels

This is one of the loveliest books I've read in a long time. Stephanie Mittman brings her characters to full life. I loved Nan, who had so much love in heart for the children she cared for--she brought tears to my eyes. And Harry was incredibly real--a man with faults who fell in love and gave his entire heart and soul to Nan. The secondary characters were also terrific, as were the very special children. While I loved everything about this book, what I think I liked best was that the characters were just so REAL. I cared about them and what happened to them. I finished this book in one day and it truly touched my heart. Bravo, Ms. Mittman, for a beautiful, beautiful, book.

Classic Victorian novel of female domination and enforced cross dressing. Mother Nature sometimes imprisons a female in a masculine body. Miss. High Heels is the beautifully written, deliciously slow-paced sensual revelation of how Dennis Evelyn Beryl metamorphosed into the lovely Denise Beryl.
"A must read novel for everyone fascinated in this subject," Sibly Whyte, Transgender Magazine

Miss High-heels: the story of a rich but girlish young gentleman under the control of his pretty step-sister and her aunt."This story is a reminiscence, a fond recollection of my colourful days as a youth. I can safely say (with the clarity of hindsight) that my youth was extraordinary. My upbringing was unlike any other young man knew at the time, and to this day, many years later, I have yet to meet a soul whose story can compare with mine in its bizarre nature. My erotic rearing gave me a great sense of alienation, yet also a feeling of being absolutely rare and precious. Of course, later in life I learned that I was not alone in my exclusive sexual proclivities; proclivities that flourished and were fostered from the time I was very young on through my early adulthood. I have since had the pleasure of finding others who share the same delicious tastes that I have enjoyed. I was cared for by my strange and beautiful stepsister, Helen, with the delicate attentions that one gives a fragile, unique flower. It was my lovely stepsister who helped me to find the "true" self that was hiding inside my male skin."

When I was first drawn to this book, it was shortely after I had lost my own boyfriend to cystic fibrosis. What stunned me most was reading the very end. It was as if Lurlene McDaniel had written my own story! Just three months before this book was published, I had watched my own boyfriend suffer painfully from CF and the day before his death, we were united in marriage in ICU. It was absolutely heart-wrenching but beautiful all the same. So you can imagine my shock and suprise when I found this book on the bookshelves of stores, I was literally speechless. It's a beautiful story I would recommand to everyone. It's a story that resembles my own life.

Undercover in High Heels Review

Undercover in High Heels
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Undercover in High Heels is a very fun and humorous mystery. The plot is simple enough and the mystery was very obvious, but what really makes this book is the great characters.
Maddie is spunky, tenacious, and great fun. She certainly isn't qualified for the roll she assumes, which causes her to stumble through the mysteries and mostly solves them by being in the wrong place at the wrong time. However, this adds to the overall humor of the book. All the secondary characters are also great. Jack Ramirez is a sexy and realistic character who cares about Maddie, even if he isn't sure how to deal with her antics. Dana, Maddie's best friend, is a sex addict trying to get help for her addiction which adds for some funny situations and moments. We also get to see more into the Tabloid reporter, Felix. He is the mysterious character who Maddie isn't quite sure how to react to. Maddie thinks she dislikes Felix, but it seems more like she doesn't wish to accept that she does actually like him. I am waiting to see what happens between Felix and Maddie, as there is some tension between the two that hopefully will be explored in later novels.
Overall this was a very enjoyable read and I am really liking this series. Granted, there are some incidents within this book that seems too convenient and sometimes not realistic, but the lightheartedness this book is going for seems to make it work. So if you are looking for a simple romantic-mystery with a delicious guy, then I highly recommend Undercover in High Heels for a nice lazy weekend.

Hot on Her Heels (Lone Star Sisters) (Hqn) Review

Hot on Her Heels (Lone Star Sisters) (Hqn)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The fourth and final book in the Lone Star Sisters series. My favorite of the series!
Garth Duncan is the illegitimate son of Jed Titan. Since he was 14-years-old, he's been on a path to destroy his father. Jed's daughters and by default, Garth's sisters, have gotten in the way, but now things have changed. The sisters and their closest friend, Dana, decide to dig up what they can on him to find out his real story.
Dana has never let a man into her life before. She has her own "secrets" that keep her from getting close to a man. She hates Garth for what he has done to her friends, but she finds herself oddly attracted to the man.
I wondered if I would like Garth after his escapades in the previous books. I liked him from the start, but loved him when he was wearing a Texas A&M sweatshirt (I'm an Aggie an love a man in maroon). He truly grew as a character in this book. He was real and truly likable. I enjoyed the relationship and chemistry that he had with Dana. Both of them were good characters that I wanted to see happy in the end.
I can't say I have much to complain about with this book...it was the perfect ending for the series. If I would change anything, it would be fewer references to Lexi's pregnancy and how big and uncomfortable she is. I got it...it was drilled into my head in the first 1/3 of the book...by the end, I was irritated by it.
You won't be disappointed by the ending to this one...all ends well.

Under the Duvet : Notes on High Heels, Movie Deals, Wagon Wheels, Shoes, Reviews, Having the Blues, Builders, Babies, Families, and Other Calamities
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Under the Duvet is the latest of a small genre that consists of the short non-fiction works (columns, essays, random thoughts) of writers who are better-known for their novels. Alice Thomas Ellis, who is best-known for The Summer Trilogy novels, also wrote the Home Life series, a collection of columns about her everyday life in Wales. Sue Townsend wrote the Adrian Mole stories and recently published a collection of columns about her everyday life called The Public Confessions of a Middle-Aged Woman. Amy Tan collects her musings and thoughts in The Opposite of Fate. Writers who are successful in spinning good stories seem to be able to take mundane situations and turn them into good stories. This is a real treat for people like me who read very little fiction.
So how does Marian Keyes's new book measure up? Under the Duvet starts promisingly, with a short piece about her life as a not-so-glamorous novelist, and a previously unpublished essay about the eight months she wrote a cosmetics column for a magazine. These are probably the best bits in the book.
Maybe you do have to enjoy the fiction of the author to also enjoy their non-fiction. I confess I have not read any of Keyes's fiction. There's too much in Under the Duvet about shopping and shoes for my taste, but readers of Keyes's fiction might find that a plus.
Some of the pieces are on subjects that desperately need an original angle, but are not getting it here. For instance, on her trip to Los Angeles, Keyes predictably mentions the smog, silicone enhancements, and botox, and the fact that no one walks. I probably wouldn't have noticed her over-fondness for the word "eejit" (idiot) if I had read these pieces over time, rather than in two days.
Still, I enjoyed reading these essays and columns, and although they haven't inspired me to read Keyes's fiction, I will continue to hunt down books like this. Anyone know of any others?

Hannah Grey is a home-care RN who specializes in arthritis cases and is trained in physical therapy. When one of her patients leaves her some money in his will, the family believes she slept her way into earning it. The family uses their influence to have Hannah's New Hampshire nursing certificate suspended. Believing the lies, Carrick Manly decides Hannah is just the greedy person he needs.
Hannah is desperate for work and agrees when Carrick offers her the job of caring for his mother, Melinda, in her Maine coast mansion. Melinda has not left the mansion in fifteen years. That was when her husband crashed a multibillion-dollar business, stole the money and left the country without looking back. Carrick believes his mother knows where his father stashed the money and wants Hannah to pull the information out of her. But Carrick has read Hannah all wrong and she refuses to help scam Melinda. Hannah is getting ready to leave when Melinda comes up and asks her to remain.
Gabriel Prescott is one of Carrick's half-brothers. Gabriel plans to tell Carrick, but before he can Carrick hires his security firm. Gabriel hides monitors and audio devices all over the mansion because Carrick has convinced him that Hannah is abusing the elderly lady. But then Melinda is murdered and the video looks like Hannah is the killer. Worse, the equipment proves that Melinda had known where the money was all along and has not only told Hannah where it is being held, but all the access codes to retrieve it. Hannah finds herself on the run from the law and Carrick's unscrupulous people. Gabriel may be the only one who can keep her alive, if she can convince him of her innocence.
***** Christina Dodd proves, once again, that she has found her calling in life. This tale has a villain that readers will love to hate. He is a slimy man who seems to pull the wool over the eyes of all except his mother and Hannah (uh, and the thugs he owes money to). Full of action and suspense, this story kept me hooked from first until last. I found it to be a wild ride and absolutely thrilling! *****

Hot Wheels and High Heels Review

Hot Wheels and High Heels
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Although Jane Graves is a local author and one whose name I've seen on several books, I had not yet read one of her novels. When I saw the cover of HOT WHEELS AND HIGH HEELS I was immediately intrigued. The back cover copy offered humor and a look at the life of a repo man. I figured if the romance didn't hook me, I still had the adventures of stealing cars from people who didn't want him stolen. These days the action in a romance novel can be top-rate.
I'm a big Stephanie Plum fan. I had the good fortune of discovering Janet Evanovitch's books when the first one came out. So I was there at the beginning. I'm also a fan of some of the paranormal series that are out there. As a guy, I really don't think that's all that uncommon these days. Men read a lot of women writers. I still treasure my Robert B. Parker stuff, but I love the laughs and insights provided by the ladies. And some of them provide chills and thrills as well.
Back to Jane Graves. When I flipped open the book and began reading, I was immediately attracted to the ease with which the author puts words on the page. I was actually several pages into the story before I realized how much I'd read. The prose is effortless, and the characters are instantly unique and identifiable.
Darcy McDaniel, the heroine, has got a real problem. While she was down in Mexico on vacation with a friend, her husband sold her house, emptied the bank accounts, and ran up the charge cards - then vanished. For the last fifteen years Darcy has been a trophy wife. She traded her good looks to a man old enough to her father for a lifestyle of malls, manicures, and personal trainers. Later in the novel you'll find out more of her motivations for doing that.
I have to admit in the beginning I wasn't very sympathetic toward Darcy. It wasn't that I figured she got what she had coming to her, but I know other people who have much worse problems. Still, this is a huge problem for her.
Before she knows it, she's back living with her parents in the same small, dingy trailer park that she'd grown up in. It was suddenly like the last fifteen years never existed. All she has left is her dog Pepe and her Mercedes, which had been at the airport awaiting her return.
Enter John Stark, ex-cop turned repossession agent. And this repo man has papers to reclaim Darcy's beloved Mercedes. He's strictly a no-nonsense kind of guy who gets the job done right the first time. Unfortunately, he's never dealt with anyone like Darcy. She makes a fool of him and keeps the Mercedes. For a time. Then John returns with a truck and grabs the luxury vehicle with no problem.
As the fates conspire against them, as they are sometimes do in romance novels, Darcy gets under John's skin and he inadvertently offers her the receptionist job at his agency. Darcy refuses to take it at first, but quickly finds that no one else will give her a job. John's partner Tony holds John to his promise. Darcy starts to work, living hand-to-mouth.
Since this is a romance novel, the rest of the story about boy-gets-girl is predictable in many ways. However, Jane Graves keeps the story lighthearted, fun, and fast-paced. Despite the fact that I was certain I knew how the story would end up, I stayed glued to the pages - to the character development, to the dialogue, and to the rapid scenes.
That's one of the best tricks the author pulled off in this book: there was honest character development. Darcy grew as a character. For me, she went from being grossly unlikable to sympathetic and admirable. The changes she made in the way she looked at the world, herself, her family, and in what she thought she wanted were all real. I've seen people make those same changes for a lot of the same reasons.
Maybe the plot is the same romance novel that has been told for years, but Jane Graves makes her characters come to life in ways that many romance novelists don't. She makes the predictable a unique experience and worthwhile. Not only that, but her prose zings right along and readers will be at the end of the book before they know it.
As I said, this is my first Jane Graves book. But it won't be my last. She set the bar high in this one. I want to look at earlier books and get the sequel to this one coming out next year when she finds the right woman for skirt-chasing Tony. Pick this one up, folks. For the beach or just for fun. It's a good one.

The Greek Tycoon's Achilles Heel (Harlequin Presents Extra: the Greek Tycoons) Review

The Greek Tycoon's Achilles Heel (Harlequin Presents Extra: the Greek Tycoons)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have read a few novels by Lucy Gordon and so far all her work is well-written, and departs somewhat from the Harlequin "formula" of arrogant protagonists and trembling, shy virgin heroines.
This story maybe went on a little too long, but was a good read. The writing flowed well and I cared about the characters. It starts out with the hero and heroine meeting as teenagers/young adults. The hero is going through a broody/sulky stage (brought on by a pretty awful trauma, we learn later) and his encounter with the spunky teenaged heroine helps him through a personal crisis, and enables him to see things a little clearer so he can move on.
Fast forward 15 years, and the hero is functioning "okay," but has a reputation for coldness and remoteness. He doesn't trust easily--or at all. He encounters the heroine again. This time she's more confident, already had a marriage and divorce under her belt (in other words, is not the typical Harlequin Presents trembling virgin) and while she seems pretty easy-going on the surface, she has her own hidden emotional "baggage" as well.
The rest of the novel follows their journey of finding each other, and finding a way to connect again. Of course there has to be a villain, and conflict, but mostly the novel focuses on their relationship.
I found this story to be satisfying, and enjoyable to read. Don't get your hopes up *too* high (we are talking about Harlequin Presents, after all) but enjoy it for what it is.

Trouble in High Heels (Fortune Hunter) Review

What a great, enjoyable read! Tiramisu is that wonderful Italian dessert of espresso, rich cream cheese and elegant flavors that means "pick me up" in Italian. That image fits this charming book to a tee. Well done characters, especially the female lead, who (for a change!) when placed in a dangerous situation has the common sense to listen to a man who knows how to handle the situation. So often, weaker authors will have the female lead do something completely stupid just to prove her independance. Additional secondary characters are thought out and ADD to the plot, enriching the story and making the emotional connections reasonable and sweet. The sensuality between the lead couple is dynamite and I love any story that can use $8000 to justify not only a superior Spa Day but to underwrite an entire life change. Remember, this tasty little gem of a book is not meant for anything more than the best escape--putting too many expectations on the story could cause the lightness and fun to deflate like over-beaten whipped cream.

Wisdom creates wonderful characters and unique plots. From 50 Ways to Hex Your Lover straight through Hex in High Heels, this is a series that will entertain and charm you. The romance is always hot, the heroes are to die for (and Jake in Hex In High Heels may be my favorite of the bunch). The witches are bright, funny, caring and completely loyal to their friends. I look forward to the next and hope Linda Wisdom keeps writing these highly entertaining books!
