The Lucky Guide to Mastering Any Style: How to Wear Iconic Looks and Make Them Your Own Review

The Lucky Guide to Mastering Any Style: How to Wear Iconic Looks and Make Them Your Own

I have many of the more recent fashion "how to" type books (US Secrets of Celebrity Style, The Pocket Stylist, Victoria Beckham's That Extra Half Inch, Glamour's Big Book of Do's and Don'ts, Harper's Bazaar Great Style, etc.). What makes this book different is that instead of telling you how to pick a hot designer bag (ugh) or how to dress according to your age, this book explains clothing according to overall iconic styles; ie, American Classic, Euro Chic, bohemian, etc. Each chapter has the "must have" pieces for a particular look, outfits, and people who are interviewed as being representative of that type of style. The whole look and feel of the book is so beautiful and inspiring, I could barely put it down the day after I bought it.

Cowboy Boot Book, The Review

Cowboy Boot Book, The
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a book that works on many levels making it a great introduction to the history, art, and craft of cowboy bootmaking. It quotes Jack Reed, the only owner of a one-man boot shop left in Texas, saying it takes 372 steps to make cowboy boots, but is not detailed enough to list them all. Until I read this book, I had no idea that there was a market in vintage cowboy boots. I found out that original ornate tops can be fitted with a replaced foot to bring old boots back to life. Jim Arndt's photographs of boots, bootmakers, and boot collectors are outstanding throughout and really bring the book to life. The beginning of the book does an admirable job tracing the history of cowboy boots back to the old Texas-to-Kansas cattle drives of the post-Civil War era. This is followed by a great A - Z directory of the various skins that have been used to make the boots including characteristics, care, and current availability. The next section is a great history of the major boot making factories and the people behind them with chapters on Justin, Nocona, Tony Lama, Lucchese, and Rocketbuster. The rest of the book covers the rest of the cowboy boot business and personalities. Included are descriptions of individual bootmakers and cowboy boot collectors. Each is lavishly illustrated with pictures of them and their boots. The author and photographer are avid collectors and their collections are covered in this section of the book. The book ends with an outline of the retail side of the industry. Major sellers of new and vintage boots are described and a state-by-state Store Guide is included. Of course, not every state has a custom bootmaker or a vintage cowboy boot store, but you can still find the nearest one if this book has convinced you that you are ready for the next step above looking in the Yellow Pages under Western Apparel. The only place where I felt this book went too far is when they say in the caption to a photograph: "the details of this pair of boots could be compared to a fine oil painting." But if you want a basic knowledge of cowboy boots, or love to look at cowboy boots either in a store or on other people's feet this is the book for you.

It's a "pictorial guide to fancy footgear," states Texas Monthly. THE COWBOY BOOT BOOK has it all--history, anatomy, leathers, fit, care, makers, sellers, and famous wearers--even a glossary of boot terms for the novice. Beard's anecdotes and Texas charm will keep you entertained; Arndt's heart-stopping photos will keep you enthralled. The recent renaissance of artful bootmaking will keep this selling.

This is such a cute and sassy little book that I love to share with my girlfriends... The author does such a good job of capturing the mood of a woman as suggested by (that increasingly important decision) the shoe she chooses that day. I bought five to give out as gifts to my favorite ladies...

Art of the Boot Review

Art of the Boot
Average Reviews:

The book is a masterly revision/expansion of its parent, The Cowboy Boot Book. Anyone who is remotely interested in cowboy boots would love this one. The boots and their photographs are remarkable. I would not have thought that Arndt could have done better, but he did. I had the privilege of seeing some of these boots and talking to some of the featured bootmakers this summer. After that and buying a copy of the book, I went out and bought a pair of boots. You might just be hooked!

The Pocket Stylist: Behind-the-Scenes Expertise from a Fashion Pro on Creating Your Own Look Review

The Pocket Stylist: Behind-the-Scenes Expertise from a Fashion Pro on Creating Your Own Look
Average Reviews:

In the sea of so called 'fashion experts', Farr is a real standout. Her approach to style differs greatly in that it instructs women how to honestly assess their wardrobes and logically pinpoint their individual body type. She clarifies how to flatter any figure (including plus sizes), incorporate trends and individual style, mix and match pieces, shop on a budget and avoid falling victim to common fashion mishaps. The book isn't limited to just clothing - bras, stockings accessories and tips from beauty experts are also thoroughly covered. Best of all there are pages and pages of tips, places to shop and stylist secret weapons that even the most fashion savvy girl probably doesn't know. My favorite section of the book is 'Your Tailor is Your Best Friend' which details everything from having a garment fit to having a piece custom made. Unlike other guides I have read, this book is written without condescension and truly aims to make all women feel beautiful and stylish. This book is not only an incredibly useful tool but is also a great read. Farr writes with humor and gives the reader a number of hilarious personal, real women and celebrity anecdotes.
This is without a doubt the fashion guide to buy. I have given a few copies as gifts and my friends loved it too.

Shoes: What Every Woman Should Know Review

Shoes: What Every Woman Should Know

What is it about women and shoes??? Stephanie Pedersen's "Shoes: What Every Woman Should Know" is an awesome history of shoess from past to present. The photos are delicious, and I enjoyed reading about the history of shoes.
One of my favorite sections in the book was "Red Shoes", which was all about the sexual power of scarlet pumps. The adage "red shoes, no knickers may or may not be true, but I ain't tellin'!
If you have more than two pairs of shoes in your closet, you'll love this book!

New Shoes: Contemporary Footwear Design Review

New Shoes: Contemporary Footwear Design
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Yes, I own more pairs of shoes than I can admit to. Yes, I have found myself short on rent, sacrificed for a pair of shoes. So, of course, any book that has to do with shoes is already a winner in my book.
You can find hundreds of books on shoes, what makes this one different is that it is an introduction to the ground-breaking and stunning world of contemporary footwear. Hundreds of full page, glossy pictures, of modern shoes from designers like Benoit Meleard and his heel-less, modern-art designs to Nicholas Kirkwood and his futuristic beauties leap out of the page at you. There are fashion-spread type layouts, like the image of a Pierre Hardy suede and glace kid striped wedge in a field of balloons and then there are plain white pages of shoes, accompanied by the designers drawings, all prefaced with a description of biography of the artists.
More than just shoe-porn, New Shoes introduces you to the future, to boxy designs that look more purse than shoe, booties made from delicate folds of leather and sandals of hard plastic twisted to resemble furniture. This book is essential for any shoe lover, from the Louboutin lover to the classic Chuck gal.

Style Clinic: How to Look Fabulous All the Time, at Any Age, for Any Occasion Review

Style Clinic: How to Look Fabulous All the Time, at Any Age, for Any Occasion
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I didn't think I could love a book as much I love Lucky's Shopping Manual, a timeless classic for crafting your own style. However, Paula Reed's Style Clinic jutxaposes the practical, readily applicable, styling advice of Lucky's Manual with the chic sophistication of Nina Garcia's seminal texts (Black Book of Style and the "Hundred"). While you love the whimsical drawings by Ruben Toledo in Garcia's book, it left you wanting actual photographs to help pull the concepts together. In terms of its visual appeal, Reed's Style Clinic delivers what Garcia's texts do not.
The chapters are well organized, easy to understand and apply, provides styling choices at every price-point, as well as to-do lists, and suggestions for essential items. The book stresses QUALITY over QUANTITY and the photos are beautiful, vibrant, and inspirational. I had the book two days before I went and purged several ill-fitting, overly trendy, cheap garments from my closet and what a difference it makes!
Lastly, while many love Lucky's shopping manual, it does tend to lean heavily towards the early-mid twenties, size 2-6 crowd. Reed has styling recommendations for any age, the thin, curvy, top heavy, and bottom light. Like Garcia, Finney (the budget fashionista), and Tim Gunn, Reed stresses Style over fashion and trends. Sound advice in an economy where many of us are recessionista converts.
In short, GO GET IT! YOU WON'T BE SORRY!

Glamour's Big Book of Dos and Don'ts: Fashion Help for Every Woman Review

Glamour's Big Book of Dos and Don'ts: Fashion Help for Every Woman
Average Reviews:

As a teenager I subscribed to Glamour magazine, and loved the fashion Do's and Don't's section. I was disappointed when I got this book and saw that the authors had included a great many photos of bare breasts and behinds. I felt that the women photographed for many of the "don't" pictures hadn't made mistakes in fashion -- they just had no sense of propriety. This book was embarrassing and I sure didn't want it laying around for my family to look at, so I returned it. I would suggest passing over this book and getting one that really will help you develop good fashion sense.
